More about Gander and how the community there opened its hearts and homes to people in the aftermath of September 11. Auditions for Come From Away, the musical inspired by the events in Gander, will be held September 9 and 10 from 7-9 pm at the theatre. More information is on our website. ...

This is the true story that inspired Come From Away. Auditions for Come From Away will be held on September 9 and 10 from 7-9 pm.

Directed by Mikey Virts with Musical Director Katie Martin, production dates will be November 11-15 and November 18-22, 2026. Auditioners should come prepared to sing 16 bars of any song of their choosing. They may sing acapella or bring karaoke tracks with them. The theatre will be able to play them through bluetooth. No headshots or prepared monologues are required. Actors only need to attend one day of auditions. On September 11, 2001, U.S. airspace was suddenly closed, leaving hundreds of aircraft already in the sky needing somewhere safe to land.

Canada responded with an extraordinary aviation effort known as Operation Yellow Ribbon.

Canadian authorities diverted 224 flights carrying more than 33,000 passengers to airports across the country. From Halifax and Gander to Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver, airports quickly made room for unexpected arrivals from around the world.

Gander, Newfoundland, became one of the most remarkable examples. The small community welcomed 38 aircraft carrying 6,656 passengers and crew. Schools, churches and community buildings became temporary shelters, while local residents provided meals, clothing, beds and other essentials.

Many travelers remained in Canada for several days before continuing their journeys.

Operation Yellow Ribbon became one of aviation history’s greatest examples of international cooperation and hospitality.

When more than 33,000 travelers suddenly needed somewhere to land, Canada opened its skies and its doors.
